On January 14th, the Committee on Social Service and Veterans Affairs met to discuss the Braille and Large-Print Menus project. Led jointly by the Committee on Disabilities and Northampton Business Improvement District, the project aims to encourage restaurants in Northampton to provide braille and large-print menus for customers upon request.
Present at the meeting were Tori Eklund, chair of the Committee on Disabilities, and Lola Kelso, Executive Assistant of the Northampton BID. Ms. Eklund spoke first, detailing the history of the year-long project. Then Ms. Kelso elaborated on the current status of the project, showing the large-print and braille copies she had received just that morning. A participating restaurant will receive two braille and four large-print menus at no cost to themselves. The large-print menus are scheduled to be updated twice a year and the braille menus once. So far, eight restaurants have agreed to participate in the project: Fitzwilly’s, Local Burger, Mama Iguana’s, Paul and Elizabeth’s, Pizzeria Paradiso, Siam Square, Spoleto, and Sierra Grille. On Thursday, Ms. Eklund is expected to report on the status of the project before City Council.
